The General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic is responsible for skilled vehicle maintenance tasks, including troubleshooting, disassemble, repair, assembly, and installation of various components such as automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, and electric/pneumatic/hydraulic parts. They also handle chassis and body repairs for the bus and automotive fleet at WMATA. The training class is 9 weeks.
Salary: Starting Salary $70K per year
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- The following vocational/technical training can be substituted for two (2) years of full time work experience:
- Three (3) years high school mechanical training
- Two (2) years of vocational training in transit bus, automotive, medium/heavy truck or school bus maintenance from an accredited school recognized by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC)
- Driver’s License Required. An Intra State Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger, Air Brake and tow truck operations indorsements is accepted with a provisional appointment valid until the age of 21. Also, you must have a clean driving record with no more than 4 negative points and 1 moving violation in the past 24 month.
- Required Certifications: ASE Entry Level or ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification in transit bus, automotive, medium/heavy truck or school bus maintenance.
